भारत में बहुसंख्यक महिलाओं पर अल्प-पोषण का प्रतिकूल प्रभाव जारी है। भारत में, हर तीसरी महिला कुपोषित है और हर दूसरी महिला एनीमिक है। एक अल्पपोषित माँ लगभग अनिवार्य रूप से कम जन्म के बच्चे को जन्म देती है। जब खराब पोषण गर्भाशय में शुरू होता है, तो यह पूरे जीवन चक्र में फैल जाता है क्योंकि परिवर्तन काफी हद तक अपरिवर्तनीय होते हैं। आर्थिक और सामाजिक संकटों के कारण कई महिलाएं अपनी गर्भावस्था के अंतिम दिनों तक अपने परिवार के लिए जीविकोपार्जन का काम करती रहती हैं। इसके अलावा, वे बच्चे के जन्म के तुरंत बाद काम करना शुरू कर देते हैं, भले ही उनके शरीर इसे अनुमति नहीं देते हों, इस प्रकार उनके शरीर को एक तरफ पूरी तरह से ठीक होने से रोकते हैं, और पहले छह महीनों में अपने युवा शिशु को विशेष रूप से स्तनपान कराने की उनकी क्षमता को बाधित करते हैं।
01.01.2017 से, देश के सभी जिलों में मातृत्व लाभ कार्यक्रम लागू किया गया है। कार्यक्रम का नाम is प्रधानमंत्री मातृ वंदना योजना ’(PMMVY) रखा गया है। पीएमएमवीवाई के तहत, मातृ और बाल स्वास्थ्य से संबंधित विशिष्ट शर्तों को पूरा करने के लिए परिवार के पहले जीवित बच्चे के लिए गर्भवती महिलाओं और स्तनपान कराने वाली माताओं (पीडब्लू और एलएम) के बैंक / पोस्ट ऑफिस खाते को सीधे, 5000 / – का नकद प्रोत्साहन प्रदान किया जाता है।
PMMVY को राज्यों / संघ राज्य क्षेत्रों के संबंध में महिला और बाल विकास मंत्रालय के तहत छाता ICDS की आंगनवाड़ी सेवा योजना के मंच का उपयोग करके महिला और बाल विकास विभाग / समाज कल्याण विभाग के माध्यम से और राज्यों / संघ राज्य क्षेत्रों के संबंध में स्वास्थ्य प्रणाली के माध्यम से लागू किया जाता है जहां योजना स्वास्थ्य और परिवार कल्याण विभाग द्वारा कार्यान्वित किया जाता है।
PMMVY वेब आधारित एमआईएस सॉफ्टवेयर एप्लिकेशन के माध्यम से लागू किया जाता है और कार्यान्वयन का केंद्र बिंदु आंगनवाड़ी केंद्र (AWC) और ASHA / ANM कार्यकर्ता होंगे।

Under-nutrition continues to adversely affect majority of women in India. In India, every third woman is undernourished and every second woman is anemic. An undernourished mother almost inevitably gives birth to a low birth weight baby. When poor nutrition starts in-utero, it extends throughout the life cycle since the changes are largely irreversible. Owing to economic and social distress many women continue to work to earn a living for their family right up to the last days of their pregnancy. Furthermore, they resume working soon after childbirth, even though their bodies might not permit it, thus preventing their bodies from fully recovering on one hand, and also impeding their ability to exclusively breastfeed their young infant in the first six months.
From 01.01.2017, the Maternity Benefit Programme is implemented in all the districts of the country. The programme is named as ‘Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana’ (PMMVY). Under PMMVY, a cash incentive of ` 5000/- is provided directly to the Bank / Post Office Account of Pregnant Women and Lactating Mothers (PW&LM) for first living child of the family subject to fulfilling specific conditions relating to Maternal and Child Health.
PMMVY is implemented using the platform of Anganwadi Services scheme of Umbrella ICDS under Ministry of Women and Child Development in respect of States/ UTs implementing scheme through Women and Child Development Department/ Social Welfare Department and through Health system in respect of States/ UTs where scheme is implemented by Health & Family Welfare Department.
PMMVY is implemented through a centrally deployed Web Based MIS Software application and the focal point of implementation would be the Anganwadi Centre (AWC) and ASHA/ ANM workers.
